Bijli Mahadev temple is one of the most ancient and sacred temples in the spectacular Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh. This temple is seated at an altitude of 2,460 metres and an arduous trek of 2 kms from the last motorable road through a scenic Cedar forest leads you to this divine place that offers a panoramic view of Kullu and Parvati valleys. On a clear day, one can see the Indrasan Mount and Deo Tibba of the Pir Panjal range in the distance. Once you reach the peak of the mountain, a spectacular 360-degree view of the Kullu and Parvati valley shall greet you. In the month of Shravana, a fair is held which is attended by pilgrims from all over the country.

Legend of Bijli Mahadev Temple

A legend revolving around the Bijli Mahadev Temple states that there was a fearsome Daitya(demon) called Kulaanta who took the form of an enormous serpent and kept on increasing his body till he reached Mathan Village. Upon reaching this sacrosanct place, he decided to submerge all the beings by stopping the flow of the Beas river. Lord Mahadev, protector of all understood the cruel intent of Kulaanta and decided to create an illusion to trick him. Lord Shiva went to Kulaanta and raised an alarm saying that his tail was on fire. When Kulaanta turned his mighty head, Lord Shiva ferociously slayed the demon’s head with his trishul. The gigantic body of Kulaanta transformed into a mountain range that stretches all the way to Rohtang Pass and beyond and it is said that Kullu derives its name from Kulaanta.

According to another belief, Kullu Valley used to get innumerable lightning thunder bolts that destroyed cattle, forests as well as mankind. The localites prayed Lord Shiva to save them from this natural disaster. Lord Shiva chose to manifest himself in this place to absorb the lightning strikes and protect everyone. Lord Shiva commanded Lord Indra to use his vajra (thunderbolt) to create lightning in this place once in twelve years to maintain the balance of the universe.

Every year mysteriously either the Shiva lingam or the presiding deity’s sacred wooden staff gets hit by lightning bolts. The lingam gets shattered into pieces due to the lightning, but the priest customarily assembles it back together by putting cereal and pulse flour with unsalted butter. Within a few months, the lingam gets its solid shape back, just like before. Local beliefs suggest that the lightning strikes the lingam or the wooden staff as sheer divine grace. Lord Shiva wants to save the inhabitants of the region from any underlying evil, and that the reason the lightning strikes the exact spot every year. Other beliefs suggest that the lightning sites;f is a divine blessing and carries special powers.
